INTRODUCING

Rowan Walpole

Rowan lives and works in Cape Town, drawing constant inspiration from its remarkable scenery, character, and people. He is fascinated by the changing colours and moods of the landscape across seasons and shifting weather.

Working primarily in watercolour and textured palette knife oils, Rowan paints whenever he can, often taking his children on plein air outings. His watercolours capture immediacy, with fluid washes and visible linework that convey fleeting light and atmosphere. His oils are bold and tactile, built with a palette knife to create expressive, textured surfaces celebrating colour and movement.

For Rowan, painting is first and foremost about enjoyment. He finds deep satisfaction in putting pigment to paper and loves connecting with people through his work, hearing their personal ties to places. As long as it remains fun, he intends to keep painting, keeping it accessible, and continuing to share these experiences with others.

"That’s also the beauty of water colour, the spontaneity and the lack of absolute, picture-like perfection."
