INTRODUCING

Luke Williams

Luke Williams was born in London in 1980 and studied illustration at Bristol University. Driven by a passion for science, food, and fermentation, he spent 15 years in Europe making cheese and developing dairy products. In 2012, he and his wife relocated to South Africa, where he continued working in the Winelands before establishing a cheese shop, fermentation-focused restaurant, and wholesale business on Bree Street, which they sold shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2020, following the passing of his grandfather, an amateur landscape painter who had first taught him to paint, Williams inherited his box of brushes. This moment marked a return to painting after a 20-year hiatus. Reconnecting with oils and inspired by time spent in nature during lockdown, he became deeply fascinated by the shifting qualities of light and the subtle colour of shadows.

Now painting full-time, Williams works primarily in oils and acrylics. His practice centres on the quiet beauty of natural landscapes, with a particular focus on tonal variation, atmospheric perspective, and the way light transforms a scene from foreground to distance, an exploration that continues to shape each new work he creates.
