INTRODUCING
Kelly Wainwright
Kelly Wainwright is a multidisciplinary artist with over 20 years of experience in visual arts and creative production, based in Cape Town and working globally.
Her work spans painting, large scale installation, photography, and text, moving between abstraction and intuition, where absurdity meets intimacy and chaos meets ritual. She is drawn to raw, instinctive mark making, scribbles, textures, and forms that emerge from the body rather than premeditated concept. Her practice is deeply embodied, shaped by breath, movement, gravity, and gesture.
In her painting, she works with unprimed surfaces and expressive immediacy, aligned with the spirit of artists such as Richard Serra, Cy Twombly, and Jean Michel Basquiat. Imperfection, energy, and material honesty sit at the core of her visual language.
“I’m a scribbler. I work with colour, movement, and whatever wants to come through my hands. Scribblers don’t tend to explain, polish, or apologize. They leave traces.”
Across mediums, her work seeks to create moments of aliveness, permission, and reawakening.
She is also the founder of MoFlo, a somatic movement practice, and is developing PIMPP: Paintings, Installation, MoFlo, Podcast, Poetry, not categories, but channels of expression.
