INTRODUCING

Estabunn

Estabunn (he/they) is a South African multidisciplinary artist and qualified medical doctor whose work explores the intersections of identity, memory, and the human body.

Drawing from the biological sciences, particularly histology and anatomy, his practice transforms microscopic structures into expressive visual languages that examine vulnerability, resilience, and the lived experience of queer Black identity.

Influenced by fashion, textiles, portraiture, and cultural histories, Estabunn’s work moves fluidly between scientific imagery and emotional storytelling. His compositions often center the human figure, exploring how individuals navigate love, belonging, and selfhood within societies shaped by rigid and often unforgiving expectations.

The name Estabunn embodies both reclamation and remembrance: reclaiming a Zulu term historically used to demean queer men while also honouring a formative love named Esteban encountered during his travels in South America. This dual narrative reflects the broader themes within his practice, where biology, identity, and lived experience converge.

Through his work, Estabunn invites viewers to reconsider the body as both a biological form and a living archive of memory, resistance, and transformation - affirming art as a universal language and a powerful equalising force.
