Residing in Johannesburg, Asanda Kupa's strong ties to his rural upbringing in the Eastern Cape shape his perspective. Frequent visits to his childhood home keep him rooted in a neglected part of South Africa. Originating from the same region as many mineworkers, Kupa's artistic journey emerged from the Eastern Cape, influencing his exploration of power dynamics and South Africa's evolving freedom. Represented by M Studio Community, his works reflect the lives pushed to the edges of 'The New South Africa', anchoring his art in the experiences of those often overlooked.
